My childhood experience of going to live in rural India when I was young had an enormous impact on my way of seeing and being in the world. My work is about the Earth...and people of earth, about how we can be aware of its deep problems and its deep wonders.
Life is such a range of emotions and experience and sometimes painting and making sculpture and dance puts it right!
Over the years I have done a lot of art and dance projects and workshops in schools and communities and carnivals and festivals. This has stretched my work to doing very large pieces and inclusive ideas.
In my more personal work I express a deeper part of myself using earth as my underlying material.

Statement
... the world is a complex place, often full of fears on a very personal level as well as world scale. Fear, anger and sorrow can be deep… so maybe we have to go deep into understanding that we also have deep wonder, humour and kindness within our selves. We are good at focusing on failures and sometimes failure is an important key to learning, eventually, when I go deep into the failure I discover it’s often my greatest strength...well, I sort of have to turn it upside down or inside out or even outside in but it seems to work. It just takes me a long time to figure it out!
My titles matter to me… they hold the viewing point of each painting.
I use raw earth collected from the side of roads and on walks as my paint and mix it with glue and water. I use acrylics if I want other colours.
Devon is rich with different earth colours. I have noticed that earth colours are the colours of peoples skin from all the nations of the world. For me the earth paint is a metaphor and a reminder that we are people of earth
We are earth-kind… well a bit more of the kind would be good!
